With this extended cold snap upon is, we all begin to worry about frozen water pipes. Specifically in your home, apartment, business and even fire sprinkler pipes in attic spaces (which typically keeps HFD busy). As our temperatures start to warm up, those pipes begin to thaw out and that is when we start to have burst water lines. The best defense is to prevent them from freezing to begin with (easier said than done). Here are some tips that may help:
- Run water, at a trickle or a very slow drip in your sinks, to help prevent your pipes from freezing.
- Consider opening the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if that sink is along an outside wall. *Keep the garage doors closed if there are water lines (many of us have water heaters) in the garage.
If you end up with a burst water line – the first thing you need to do is shut the water off to the home / apartment. Identify that valve NOW, so if you have an emergency you’re not scrambling to locate it. We have included two pics of water shut off area that we found in our neighborhoods. #WinterWeatherSafety #OneTownOneTeam #StayWarm
